"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)"
Depp reprises his role of Jack Sparrow, Bloom reprises Will Turner and Knightley Elizabeth Swan. All of them are good, for some reason Blooms acting doesn't bother me in these movie while a lot of people say he overacts. I don't notice it in this series..But anyways, The acting is good al around.
The movie starts off really dark with Elizabeth crying over her ruined wedding as a new bad guy, Cutler Beckett is introduced as he produces warrants for the arrest for Turner and Knightley (I think Sparrow too, I forget.) This puts the movies gears in motion..Beckett will give pardons to both of them (I think..someone correct me, I may be wrong..) if he can go and recieve Jack Sparrows compass. You know, the one that doesn't point north? And so..our 2 and a half hour journey begins.
My first and biggest problem with the film? There's not as much witty comedy in this one as their was in the first one. Don't get me wrong..this is pretty godamn funny still and even the running jokes are good despite the fact that you've heard them a couple of times already just slightly different. There is definately a lack of some of the charm that the first movie had.
My second problem? Once again the film is too long by 15/20 minutes. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this though..because I felt that the movie dragged in some parts. To me Jack Sparrow makes this movie as good as it is and since the group is split up..the parts with Will Turner and E. Swan sometimes felt like they dragged.
My final complaint? Davy Jones was cool..but he just...didn't have energy. I don't know, it seems like I'm the only godamn person who didn't think Davy Jones was great. He was O'Kay. Barbossa and his crew had energy, and were fun to watch. Davy Jones and his crew were nice to look at, (you can barely tell CGI from props in certain spots,) but lack personality. Maybe he will grow on me though with repeated watchings because I do plan on watching this again....
Yes, so far it seems like I don't like the movie, but I do and like I said will be watching it again. So here is what I completely LOVE about this film. About 20 minutes in the movie kicks into high gear with Turner landing on an island inhabitted by Cannibals. This is my favorite part of the movie.. It's hilarious and it has the best joke in it throughout the whole movie if you ask me and it IS one of the running jokes from the first movie. It also has some of the best jokes IN the movie.. This lasts about 20 minutes and is extremely fun to watch..I love this section of the movie...
It's amazingly cool how the writers kept the continuity from the first film in this and didn't fuck up. The first film was made and done. Then you have to pick up the pieces and write a trilogy out of it and work in characters from the first film, and the writers did a damn good job of doing this, something that could've ended up being a total disaster. One of the things that totally blew me away was that after the credits of the first film..we see the monkey take a piece of the gold and become dead again. Now I know this is really stupid, but it blew me away. In this film, they run with this and keep him undead despite the fact that most people probably shut the movie off the second the credits start. Maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing but that just made me happy. If they keep the continuity on something so small and it's viewed AFTER THE CREDITS, just think of how well they do the rest of the film. Norrington is worked into the script..if you haven't been keeping to close attention on the coverage of the film you'll be suprised by even minor roles from the first film turning into bigger roles in the second film!
I also loved the fact that while the plot is confusing as all hell. They never dumb it down. I was confused for parts of the movie...and won't fully understand all of it until I get another viewing in, but I still got the basic gist of what was going on. This is purely an example of how you don't have to dumb down things for the audience to understand. To many things are dumbed down in movies now-a-days. This is another reason why I love these movies.
Finally. I loved the whole climactic fight on the island. I'm not going to really ruin anything but the last half an hour is just pure fucking comedy and fun. There's no other way to put it..pure fucking fun. It basically is this 3-way Fight while a cat and mouse chase is going on..I can't stress how damn good this is to watch..once again PURE FUCKING COMEDY AND FUN. Be forewarned though, this movie is being referred to as "The Empire Strikes Back," of the series. What does that mean? Well..if you're a fan of Star Wars.. you know that "The Empire Strieks Back," is the middle film and like all middle films do..they don't advance the storyline that much. This isn't exactly the case..because for "Pirates of the Caribbean," there was no 3 story plot created in the first film, so this one not only introduces a new plot, but it doesn't finish it. In other words? Don't expect any real closure to the story, you will be disappointed.
I think Gore Verbinski has tremendous potential as a director. I've seen 3 of his films so far, maybe more that I don't know about. I've seen the original "Pirates of the Caribbean," "The Weather Man," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." and he chooses diverse movies to work with."Weather Man," while it may not be great, is a perfect example of diverse. I'm extremely interested in seeing the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" flick and whatever he does following it.
Zimmers score is disappointing. Even on the CD it's disappointed. I'll explain that at a later time though. Just know that while this had potential to be quite the interesting score..it's not.
Now that I think about it..I really liked "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," and I even want to see it again...Maybe sometime next week, I don't know. It was really fun though and I hope it continues to rake in extreme amounts of money like it does now because hopefully it will teach Holly Execs a lesson. While "Pirates of the Caribbean," was "based" and I use that term LOOSELY..the only thing in common are pirates and the name, the rest of the story was original and creative. The same goes for the sequal. Totally creative and twice as original as half the shit that comes out. What do the Box office figures show? People like original, new and creative things more then shitty remakes (a huge majority of releases this year.) Not to mention that they also like GOOD films..and this is good. I do think that some of it drags, but I do think that I will begin to like it on repeated viewings.
So in conclusion? Despite the fact that half of the reviews are slamming this movie and the other half are praising it as the funnest Summer movie in a long time I have to agree with the second opinion. It's one of the funnest damn movies I've seen since..jesus, I don't know when. While I expect Entertainment Weekly to change their mind once again after slamming the sequel, (EW trashed the first movie, only to change their opinion on it later on,)I say it's good and despite all of the bad reviews, I totally stick by my opinion. Go see it, it's some of the most fun you will have in the theatre and despite some of it's slowness..you'll love it. If you don't? Threaten me through E-Mail...
