"X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)"
Saturday me and Robyn spent the day together participating in a ton of activities including the Zoo and a picnic (as I said in my last post,) and also on short notice we went to the movies! We saw this! Now on AICN it was bashed and obviously by fanboys who are to annoyed with the butchering of characters to see that's it's a decent movie.
Brett Ratner copies Singers directing style pretty well although he doesn't get as good of a performance out of some of the actors as Singer did. Hugh Jackman specifically..there's a lot of spots where Jackmans acting is stiff and his line delivery is poor in some scenes (such as the Danger Room he's supposed to be all tough and stuff but it just comes off really bad.) Halle Berry is 100% miscast. She fucking sucks as Storm and she's always been miscast from the 1st film and unfortunately she gets a bigger part in this film..UGH.
The story..umm, there are some REALLY STUPID DECISIONS IN THIS MOVIE..I think. Lets just say..two characters are killed..one isn't very important..but the other is a big one..and it is a fucking STUPID STUPID DECISION. You don't need to have big character deaths to make the movie have more depth. Famke Jansen is good as Dark Phoenix..she plays both sides of Phoenix awesomely and well..The acting is decent for the most part..but Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut is not very good. The costume design of Juggernaut = Looks pretty retarded...Vinnie Jones doesn't 100% fit the part..he works, but not very well. But his character is involved in one of the funniest parts of the movie with Kitty Pride..
Another problem, I really didn't like what they did with Rogue. Bobby starts hanging out with Kitty Pride and she gets jealous and worries that he'll be interested in her since he can touch her, etc..and she starts thinking about getting the cure. It's stupid because it just makes her look like she's a teen making a mistake over a relationship...not good. It doesn't ruin the movie and it adds a nice touch but..I really think they could've done something better with her character..but it is kind of resolved nicely..but it still makes her look like a dumb teenager..
There's one extremely bad editting part that I was told about and I was LOOKING away when it happened..After Magneto moves the Golden Gate bridge there's a quick cut where they're moving over the bridge and it's daylight and then the next cut it's night-time. But, otherwise the editting wasn't too bad.
I really liked the beginning camera shot..it was nice. Seemed like something I'd never seen before. It was nice. The end fight was alright..it could've been better. But it was entertaining. I think Dark Phoenix was underused and should've been shown throwing people the fuck around and just destroying tons of shit. I really don't understand why they didn't..I guess it's because they wanted to show that she still had a forgiving and loving side..but they could've still had that going while her destroying tons of shit...totally underused.
The movie overall was O'Kay but I really think some of the things they did with the characters were VERY BAD. Such as with Xavier and Rogue. The score by John Powell is my second favorite of the year so far. It's very loud and boomy, but it's a lot of action and catchie stuff that you can hum! There's a theme for Phoenix that kinda' sounds arabic..but it's good. The X-Men theme is used too, it's a very good score. Really one of my favorites of the year..the last 7 or so tracks are amazing, I'll do a post on the score eventually as well..
I will admit, I didn't stay after the credits to see what happened because I know what happens..I'll see it later. I really, really liked what happened with Magneto though right before the credits..totally cool. I actually liked what they did with Magneto for the most part, pretty cool stuff with him, but they really fumbled with the other characters too me..but it was still good.
"X-Men: The Last Stand" was pretty good..I can't really EXPLAIN how good this is through words..so I would give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5..It was good..but it wasn't as great as it could've been..but it was entertaining and it was fun. Powells score is fucking awesome and is one of the better things to come from the movie. I won't be buying this movie..but I will be seeing it again multiple times through other ways..it's not worth buying though. It's worth a watch though..It's a shame though, I really think this could've been much better if Singer stuck around. I don't think Fox would've done so much bullshit with the script. It's still good though..
