Here is the review that I promised earlier in the night, I will have another review coming tomorrow night I think if I have the time.
"2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)"
Stanley Kubrick is the shit. But you all probably already knew that. In my Film/Video class I took this semestor my teacher showed us the beginning of this movie..about 4/5 months ago. I watched it and I was so fucking INTO it and I wanted to see the rest of it.
This movie is a unique piece of film. It starts off showing humans before they were humans. Monkeys that were not very smart. They fight over a water hole..this monolith comes and the Monkeys see it. Some more happens but I won't spoil it. Then you see as another group of people encounter the monolith..and the same thing afterwards. Each encounter different. The main bulk of the movie focusing on the third group. 8 months after the third group ships off with a computer named "HAL." And "HAL" is evidently the first computer of it's type to make a mistake and a mess of things happen and he becomes the villain..This movie is extremely hard to explain...=P. But..that's the basis of it. If that makes sense to you..then..GOOD. If it doesn't..read the outline on IMDB.
The beginning of this movie is amazing. This whole movie is beautifully shot and amazing for it's time. The monkeys are my favorite part..that drew me into the whole movie and it's still my favorite part. It's just extremely interesting. Not many movies where there's long periods of just visual story and it works.. This movie starts off with 25 minutes of pure visual story, no dialogue. This film has a lot of visual story, no dialogue, I believe I read almost 80 minutes worth.
Next the second group that encounters the monolith again..this one was kinda' boring to me but still incredibly interesting. Finally comes the main bulk of the film with the third group encountering the monolith. The computer of "HAL" works so well as a villain..that may sound retarded. But it just works wonderfully. Kubrick is amazing. The way this is shot is amazing. The direction of the actors is amazing...none of them slip up and they make you believe they're in outer space..completely amazing. Not one of them slips up.
The end confused the hell out of me...I need to re-watch it. But I believe after researching it a bit the end isn't supposed to make 100% sense..Maybe I'm wrong. Anyone seen this and want to correct me/inform me about it? Please do..
The soundtrack is all classical music. Nothing from a composer or anything, Beethoven and a bunch of other music that I don't know the name of, but know by sound and love. It works wonderfully in the film.
Anyways, this movie is awesome. It's an awesome Sci-Fi flick. Stanley Kubrick was awesome in EVERYTHING he did. Two of my favorite movies of all time are his "The Shining," and the classic..."Full Metal Jacket." Definately see this..I've wanted to see this for a long time along with "A Clockwork Orange" which I've STILL never seen but I want to very badly. Soon, hopefully. Just see everything by Stanley Kubrick he's an amazing film maker..one of the greatest.
