I'd heard good things about this movie..pretty good things. Someone reminded me to check it out so I put it to my Netflix queue. It comes in..I watch it. Completely blew me away.
"The Machinist," is about a guy named Trent Reznik who hasn't slept in over a year. He begins to see this guy who seems to be a figment of his imagination and starts to question his own sanity.
Christian Bale is amazing as Trent Reznik. If you are unaware, Christian Bale lost a lot of weight for this role. He was down to 120 pounds. In the movie he looks like he could be Jewish and they just pulled him out of Auschwitz or Dakkar. Christian Bale is a great actor and I never knew it until now. I thought some of his acting in "Batman Begins," was a bit..meh I guess but in this he just is wonderful.
Jennifer Jason Leigh plays a regular prostitute to Reznik and also seems to be his best friend. Jennifer Jason Leigh is wonderful in the movie as well although in one of the behind the scenes clips she explain her thoughts on the movie and I think she misses the point. She says it's about what lack of sleep can do to you and she thought it was interesting but like I said, I think she completely misses the point. To me it was a story of what GUILT can do to you, the lack of sleep coming from the guilt...but at least she does a good job acting. Along with Jennifer Jason Leigh all of the supporting cast is wonderful too.
The thing about "The Machinist," is you have to be in the mood to watch it..or you may not like it because it's not your kind of flick. It's mostly dialogue driven and purely atmospheric. There aren't really any huge action scenes and all that. Don't expect to see Jewish Holocaust Survivor look-a-like Christian Bale making a gun and then going crazy with it..If you don't get into the movie it's just going to be boring to you.
One of the things that I really loved about the movie was the point of the movie. 'Bout time you get to the end you start to really care about Mr. Reznik and I found myself saying "Wow, this poor bastard.." and the ending kinda' just took me by surprise. I also LOVE the tag line for the movie: "A little guilt goes a long way..." Really good stuff.
Overall this movie is a real "mind fuck," as they call them. It was to me at least. The movie opens up and doesn't stop feeding you new information (real or not,) until the end. This movie moved Christian Bale up and he is now one of my favorite actors. Following this movie he did "Batman Begins," where he had to bulk up..that must've put a beating on his body. Dedication much?
"The Machinist," is a great movie. I definitely suggest checking it out. One of the better thrillers to come out in recent years without a doubt.
Numerical Review: 8 out of 10.
